Before the Flood & Noah

After You punished Adam and Eve for making us all sinners and Cain for killing Abel, did people get the idea that it wasn’t a smart move to go against You?

Lamech, Noah’s father, had killed at least one man and said to his two wives, If Cain shall be average sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold” (Gen 4:23-24).

“The earth also was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.  And God looked upon the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth” (Gen 6:11-12).

“And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually (Gen 6:5).

“And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.  But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD” (Gen 6:6-8).

“And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth” (Gen 6:13).

“And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be a 120 years”(Gen 6:3).

1 Some people think these 120 years mentioned in the above scripture is how long people would live to be, but I think it pertains to how long would take Noah to build the ark.

Noah

He told Noah who was the only righteous person on the face of the earth to construct an ark 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high, with three decks inside.

He promised Noah to keep him safe in the ark, along with his wife, three sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth, and their wives.

The Lord had Noah bring into the ark a pair of each kind of bird, animal and reptile, and in some cases seven pairs of each.  Noah was 600 years old when the flood came, and for forty days it raged.

The water rose higher than the highest mountain peaks, and all life on earth was blotted out, but Noah, his family and the animals were safe in the ark.

One hundred and fifty days after the flood began, the water gradually receded, and the ark came to rest upon the mountains of Ararat.

Eventually the earth was dry again, and Noah, his family and the animals disembarked.  God blessed Noah and his family and told them to repopulate the earth.  From Noah’s three sons came all the nations of the earth.

Noah lived another 350 years after the flood and was 950 years old at his death.  The story of Noah is found in Genesis, chapters 6-9.

Noah is mentioned eight times in the New Testament, and in Eze 14:14, he is listed, along with Daniel and Job for their righteousness.
